How Adapt® Non-Condensing Works

Adapt Tankless labeled cut out

The A. O. Smith Adapt® non-condensing tankless water heater saves space and supplies continuous hot water for your home.

Non-condensing technology utilizes a single copper heat exchanger to heat the water to the desired temperature. Water flows through a heat exchanger where it is heated to the desired temperature by the hot exhaust gases. The excess heat not transferred to the water is expelled through the exhaust vent. This exhaust is at a higher temperature than that of a condensing tankless heater, reducing the risk of corrosion. However, non-condensing heaters generally require metal exhaust venting to withstand the higher temperatures.

Paired with a 15-year limited warranty for the X3® models and a 10-year warranty for the base models, an A. O. Smith Adapt® non-condensing tankless water heater can provide years of hot water for your home.

Still Have Questions?

A non-condensing tankless water heater heats water on demand using a single heat exchanger, rather than storing hot water in a tank.

The A. O. Smith Adapt® NC uses a durable copper heat exchanger to rapidly heat water as it flows through the water heater. When a tap is turned on, cold water passes through the heat exchanger and is quickly brought to the set temperature, delivering continuous hot water without running out. Excess heat is vented at higher temperatures than condensing models, supporting reliable performance and long-term durability.

The Adapt® NC tankless water heater offers efficient performance with a Uniform Energy Factor (UEF) of up to 0.82. This level of efficiency helps reduce energy usage compared to traditional tank water heaters while still delivering strong, consistent hot water output.

Yes, Adapt® NC tankless water heaters are designed for flexible installation and are available in both indoor and outdoor models. A heavy-duty outdoor-rated cord supports outdoor installations, while an included wall-mount bracket makes installation easier in tight or unconventional spaces.

Tankless water heaters have different flow rates measured in gallons per minute (GPM), which indicate the amount of water they can deliver at a time. Because these water heaters don't maintain a supply of hot water in a tank, you need to choose an appropriately sized tankless model based on household needs. The ideal output rate for your home depends on the number of people in the residence, the appliances you use, and the original temperature of the water being heated. Some people install more than one tankless water heater based on their requirements. Check out our water heater selector to help choose the best water heater for your needs.

  • What do I need?
  • Before installation, you will need to determine the incoming ground water temperature, the ideal location in your home, and the correct water heater size required for your needs.
  • Where to install?
  • A tankless water heater can be installed anywhere in your home with the correct piping—closets, garage, bathrooms, etc. In warmer climates where there is no risk of freezing, a tankless water heater may be installed on the exterior of the home to save on interior space.
