How it Works

Point-of-Use Electric Tankless Water Heaters

Point-of-use electric mini-tank water heaters are installed for single applications and small load requirements. Common use cases include under sinks, in small apartments, and in room additions and garages. Since the hot water does not have to travel far, hot water is provided almost immediately depending on the flow rate and tank size.

During installation, the unit is connected directly to a cold water source. The cold water fills the tank, and an electric heating element heats the water to the set temperature until ready for use. When a faucet is opened, the heated water is released. Due to their small size, point-of-use electric mini-tank water heaters are not equipped to handle large demands and will run out of hot water at quicker rates than traditional tank water heaters. During high demand usage, if the hot water runs out the unit works quickly to reheat the cold water that was introduced into the tank.

Still Have Questions?

The gallon capacity needed when purchasing a point-of-use water heater is dependent on the application. You will need to understand the flow rate of the fixture needing hot water. These tanks range in storage capacity from 3 to 7 gallons (nominal). An install to service a shower will require a larger demand than a single faucet.
Point-of-use water heaters were designed for single-use applications, such as a single, low-flow shower or one to two sink/faucet installations. Most installs are in small homes, apartments, garages and mobile homes or where the application site is far away from the main water heating source.
There are two types of point-of-use electric water heaters: mini-tank and tankless. Mini-tank water heaters preheat reserved water until ready for use, providing a quick immediate supply that can run out in high demand periods of use. Tankless water heaters heat water on demand as it travels through electrical heating components within the system, providing a continuous flow of heated water.
