Standard residential 80-gallon electric water heaters have been unavailable since 2015 due to NAECA 3 regulations requiring electric storage water heaters above 55 gallons to use heat pump technology. Hybrid heat pump water heaters are available in this capacity. These larger tanks are also physically challenging to install at 65-75 inches tall and often won't fit through standard doorways or typical closet spaces.
Standard residential 80-gallon electric water heaters were discontinued in 2015 when NAECA 3 mandated heat pump technology for electric tanks over 55 gallons. Heat pump models in this capacity are available and use up to 70% less electricity than standard electric tanks. Starting May 6, 2029, new DOE regulations will extend the heat pump requirement to all electric tanks over 35 gallons
