Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is my second one over the past 20 years Works great so far, This is a new model that I picked up to replaced an older model of the same type/size and brand that was getting up in years, about 20 years old now so I wanted to update before there was any problems with the old one working or maybe getting a leak.I just wanted to up-date with the newer technology that does not use a pilot light burning all the time and has the red light on the front control for any trouble shooting problems that may arise over time.As far as the old Power Shot from A. O. Smith that I had before this one it was Great and had no problems with it at all other than had to re-light the pilot maybe 2 times in the 20 years it was installed , still worked OK just getting a little too old to keep using.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Working Fine So Far, but Pricey I had this installed yesterday by the HVAC company that services my furnace. Plenty of hot water. The cost of the heater is around $900 + installation, which is about double that of a similar Whirlpool or GE unit. Considering that the six year warranty covers labor for only one year, that seems like a lot of money. My last water heater lasted seventeen years. We'll see how long this one lasts.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from very efficient My existing water heater was an AO Smith as well. On Christmas Eve while taking a shower I heard a loud vibration coming from the basement. I found that the inducer wheel had seperated from the hub. I tried to repair it, but could not find any epoxy in the house, or my tool box. I am a mechanical contractor and have installed and repaired a good number of water heaters. I found the service from the old heater was great, so I called around to various contrctors to see if they might have the parts.... no luck. The day after Christmas I called Johnstone supply in Ann Arbor, MI. They were open and had a replacement heater in stock. In no time at all we were back in busuness.Thank you Johnstone! and A.O.Smith!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent water heater We previously owned the same model (natural gas, power vent, 50 gal) and after 14 years of service needed to be replaced. Due to some exhaust venting issues, we had to continue with a power vent. This model is a little shorter and slightly bigger around than our previous model. The installer was impressed and liked the burner air intake (which is now on the back side about half way up from the floor) since he said that he'd replaced units that the intake had gotten clogged with dirt and debris. He was also impressed with the relocation of the combustible gas sensor location, which is now on the side and away from any possible damage or contamination from any water leakages. His only complaint was that he had to loosen the exhaust fan assembly on top of the heater enough to slide the retaining clip rings on the water supply lines down snugly against the top of the heater. As soon as we finished filling the tank with water and turned it on I noticed the exhaust fan was quieter than our previous model. I had to do some adapting of the exhaust piping. Our previous model had a 4" pipe and the new model had a 2". In order to connect to our existing exhaust pipe I had purchase a reducer and a 5 foot section of 2" pipe so I could cut off a 3" piece to fit into your connector and into the new reducer which then was attached to our existing 4" exhaust pipe. Other than a few adjustments to complete the replacement, it is a great heater, that's the reason for the 4 Star rating. We're looking forward to many more years of problem-free hot water.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just purchased I just had this installed on 11-11-14. It is too early to recommend yet. This is the 3rd LP gas water heater I've had in 13 months. The previous 2 that I had both leaked. They were Bradford White brand, NOT AO Smith. I hope I have better luck with the AO Smith.

How it Works

Gas water heaters heat water by burning either natural gas or LP (propane). Gas water heaters need a source of air and also need to be vented properly. Cold water enters the water heater through an internal “dip tube” which forces the cold water to the bottom of the tank and pushes hot water out through the outlet connection. This arrangement provides the most hot water for a given tank size. Most gas water heaters use a pilot light. The pilot light on some models also generates the power needed to operate an electronic gas valve. When cold water enters the tank, the temperature sensor on the gas control tells the main gas valve to open. Gas flows to the burner where it is lit by the pilot light. The air needed by the burner is supplied by the room where the water heater is installed. The exhaust gases are vented to the outside. When the proper temperature is reached, the main gas valve shuts off. Because water can corrode the steel tank, we glass line the inside of the tank and install an anode rod to help reduce corrosion. The temperature and pressure relief valve is a safety device designed to open if the internal temperature or pressure of the tank exceeds certain limits. Water heaters should be large enough to provide adequate hot water even when temperatures are cold and household demand is greatest.
