Rated 3 out of 5 by from This was replacement for the same product This is a replacement for the same unit that was still under warranty. The original unit started leaking out of the top and soaked everything. It continued leaking even when completely turned off. So far this new unit is working great. Your representative was great in assisting me with the replacement process.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good looking, great price, high efficiency Wanted to get the .67 efficiency model but the price was too out of reach, almost double the price :( . I settled on this model GVR-50 which is a rating of .62, which is still good. It should recover the hotwater quickly at 88 Gal on first heat! We'll be cooking with AO Smith now! My main goal was to avoid purchasing a hotwater heater from the big box improvement stores as they prices are too high for what you get, AND I don't feel the quality is where it needs to be. I did research other brands such as Rheem, Bradford and White to name a few. We also did look at AO Smith and Rinnai Tankless systems, however there seemed to be a dependency on having a water softener system which we didn't have. Yes a tankless would have been nice to have, but also had limitations on where it could be installed since they are direct vent heaters and running additional venting across the basement room only increased the install cost. I think the price we paid and the balance with the efficiency rating was a good choice for us. In addition this 50 Gal capacity will give us the hot water capacity to install a bigger bathtub which is another reason we went with the 50 gal as well as the 88 gal return rate on the first hour for this AO Smith GVR-50.Lastly this model gives us a rebate through the gas company which saves a bit on the wallet! And finally, the AO SMith website made it easy to look up product information and specs on the water heater.Bigger water heater normally means higher cost on the gas bill. That is why the Con rating. But if you want lots of hot water, I guess you have to pay for it. (according to the label on annual cost)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from does a great job for us, as I knew it would Bought machine on internet. Have used AO Smith for 50 years and never had a problem, A 6 year warranty machine 13 years old, installed new heater because of age and not wanting a flood if it sprung a leak. It was an easy install for me as I have done 6 others in my life.. Makes a bit of noise when metal expands and contracts , but otherwise great. It is in utility room and can't hear it elsewere. Glad I bought it!

Product Features & Options

Electronic Gas Control

Intelligent control logic provides enhanced operating parameters and tighter differentials for precise sensing and faster heating response to optimize performance.

The electronic gas control incorporates an LED status indicator that monitors system operation and service diagnostics.

CoreGard™ Anode Rod

A. O. Smith’s anode rods have a stainless steel core that extends the life of the anode rod allowing superior tank protection far longer than standard anode rods.

Brass Drain Valve

Our brass drain valve is more durable and tamper-resistant than an ordinary plastic drain valve, which contributes to improved safety and reliability.

How it Works

Gas water heaters heat water by burning either natural gas or LP (propane). Gas water heaters need a source of air and also need to be vented properly. Cold water enters the water heater through an internal “dip tube” which forces the cold water to the bottom of the tank and pushes hot water out through the outlet connection. This arrangement provides the most hot water for a given tank size. Most gas water heaters use a pilot light. The pilot light on some models also generates the power needed to operate an electronic gas valve. When cold water enters the tank, the temperature sensor on the gas control tells the main gas valve to open. Gas flows to the burner where it is lit by the pilot light. The air needed by the burner is supplied by the room where the water heater is installed. The exhaust gases are vented to the outside. When the proper temperature is reached, the main gas valve shuts off. Because water can corrode the steel tank, we glass line the inside of the tank and install an anode rod to help reduce corrosion. The temperature and pressure relief valve is a safety device designed to open if the internal temperature or pressure of the tank exceeds certain limits. Water heaters should be large enough to provide adequate hot water even when temperatures are cold and household demand is greatest.
