ORANGE COUNTY, Calif. (October 16, 2018) – A. O. Smith, a leading manufacturer of hot water systems for homes and businesses, today announced Rodulf B. Occeno from Orange County, Calif., is the recipient a $2,500 Charlie Wallace Service Award. The scholarship will go toward support Oceno’s pursuit of a career in the plumbing, mechanical, or technical field.
A. O. Smith has partnered with the Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors (PHCC) Educational Foundation to fund the Charlie Wallace Service Award scholarship. It is awarded in honor of Charlie Wallace, the chief operating officer of PHCC’s Quality Service Contractors enhanced service group. Wallace retired in 2016 after serving in the plumbing-heating and cooling industry for 17 years. The scholarship is offered to students enrolled in a plumbing-heating-cooling related course of study and was created to expand the expertise essential to the HVACR and plumbing industry. Applicants are required to submit a letter of recommendation from a PHCC member in addition to an extensive portfolio of qualifications.
Occeno studies plumbing, installation, service and repair at the PHCC Academy of Orange County Apprentice Program. He works full-time as a plumber apprentice in Orange County, Calif. With the PHCC scholarship, he plans to obtain certification as a journeyman and maintain his 4.0 GPA. Occeno relocated from the Philippines in 2015. “I moved to further my opportunities,” he said. “I am determined to better myself as an apprentice plumber and complete my education to become a journeyman.”
“It is truly an honor to work with such intelligent, driven and ambitious students,” said David Chisolm, vice president of marketing at A. O. Smith. “We are proud to sponsor a scholarship that strengthens the industry by supporting highly qualified students entering a career in the trades.”
